Transfers
Tenants with Protected or Assured tenancies may apply to
transfer to another property if their current home no longer
meets their needs. Before applying please note that there are
some conditions of transfer - these are listed below:
- You must have a clear rent account - No Rent Arrears
- Your home must be in a good condition
- You have a specific need (for example, overcrowding or health
problems)
- To apply to move to a new home that has the same
number of bedrooms you must be a Gold member
Under Occupation Scheme
If you are living in a property which is too big
for you to manage, you could apply to move as an
'underoccupier'.
Our underoccupation scheme could help you move to a smaller,
more manageable home and offer you a cash incentive, plus financial
help with your move. We will be able to give you help or advice on
removals and many other issues associated with moving.
As an under occupier you will have a higher priority on the
transfer list and if you are aged over 55, you can apply for
sheltered accommodation or a bungalow.
We will offer help with and/or
advice on:
- removals
- clearing your property of unwanted
furniture and carpets
In addition:
- you will receive £250 for every spare bedroom you give
up (subject to you having a clear rent account).
- £600 as a moving grant
- £500 if you move to a sheltered scheme

How do I apply?
You must complete a transfer form and, if applying for a
transfer for health reasons you must complete a Medical Assessment
Form then pass it on to your GP or other medical
specialist, so they can complete the rest. Send this to us with
your transfer application form.
The Medical information that you supply us with will be
forwarded to an independent outside qualified medical advisor who
will award the most appropriate category to be awarded. There are
four levels of medical priority, Category 1-4, 1 being the highest
and 4 being the lowest.
Telephone us on 0845 113 3000 or email customerservice@mhs.org.uk to
get the forms sent to you by post or click on the link to

What happens after I apply?
Your area Housing Officer will visit you to discuss your
transfer application and carry out a property inspection. We will
ask you to choose where you would like to move to and provide
information about your household. Any works identified during the
property inspection must be completed before you are
offered alternative accommodation.
How long you will have to wait to move will depend on how many
properties become available in the areas you have chosen, the type
of property you need and how many people are waiting for the same
type of property in the same area. By choosing more areas you will
increase your chances of moving because there will be more
properties. Due to the pressure on housing needs it’s
important that we ensure that properties are allocated
appropriately.
