Golfers
raise over £6,000 for charity
A magnificent £6,500 was raised for
Macmillan Cancer Care at the very first mhs homes charity golf day.
Friends and business partners were among the ninety six golfers who
played eighteen holes at Upchurch River Valley Golf Club followed
by a three course dinner.
It rained for most of the day, but
that didn’t dampen the spirits of the players. Even the Patron of
Macmillan and special guest, Kaddy Lee-Preston, TV’s most popular
weather girl, couldn’t do anything about the weather but she
pointed out that the sun had come out when she arrived for the
evening meal.
Fund raising included a raffle in the evening for which partners
donated prizes raising almost a £1000. Prizes included a built in
microwave oven donated by Howdens, a case of champagne donated by
Potter Paper Partnership and £50 of shopping vouchers by Gary
Gabriel Associates. Other local businesses contributed by donating
a variety of prizes. Some had chosen to sponsor things through out
the day such as a pack of golf balls for each player sponsored by
Hurst Building Services and the chance to win a brand new Honda CRV
for a hole in one, sponsored by Swale Heating.
George
Stevens and Patricia Johnson, two tenants of mhs homes who had won
umbrellas autographed by Kaddy Lee- Preston in a competition in the
mhs homes tenants’ newsletter donated their prizes back when they
heard that money was being raised for a cancer care unit. Both had
experienced cancer in their families and wanted to do their bit to
help raise money. George said," We have had cancer in the family
and I think it’s brilliant that mhs staff are raising money for a
Cancer Care Unit at Medway."
Madeline Chainey, PR Manager said,
"Our aim is to raise £50,000 before the end of the year and this
golf day has boosted our funds bringing us up to a total of £22,000
in just four months. A big thank you to everybody that contributed
making the event a great success: "We are overwhelmed because
everybody has been so supportive and generous. All of the money
raised from the day will go specifically towards getting us a local
cancer care unit. Let’s face it any single one of us could need it
one day!"
John Sands, Chief Executive said, "A sequence of charity
fundraising events was planned at the beginning of the year when it
was agreed that we would hold our first golf challenge. The day was
a tremendous success. We have received so many messages from people
that we have decided to make it an annual St Georges Day
event."
