Transformation project to convert three garage sites into new communities is nearing completion

Three underused garage sites across Medway have been transformed into new homes.

The sites include St Johns Road in Hoo, Hoopers Close and Fleet Road in Rochester, which were all earmarked as having great potential.

"These developments are fantastic examples of how we've transformed three garage sites into great communities, providing well designed homes to meet a range of housing needs.

The new homes represent a sustainable form of development on underused sites, by utilising space and totally renovating the local area. I’d like to thank all of our partners for their hard work across these developments."

Sarah Paxton, Assistant Director of Development and Regeneration at mhs homes

We presented our work to local councillors on Tuesday 20 March, alongside Chartway Group, with a guided tour of all three locations.

"To see the transformation of these garage sites has been very rewarding for Chartway Group. Building quality homes for people on sites which were previously underused is a great showcase of joint working with mhs homes with the focus of creating new communities."

Tim McLoughlin, Projects Director for Chartway Group

“We’re pleased to be able to showcase these exciting new developments and highlight the work we’re doing to provide sustainable housing solutions to meet housing needs in Medway”, Sarah added.

Fleet Road, formerly occupied by 86 underused garages now offers six, one-bed homes and five, two-bed homes, all for market rent.

Alex moved into his one-bed home in February this year.

"It’s a nice quiet residential neighbourhood, within a short walk of local shops and not far from Rochester high street and train station, with good links to London and beyond.

The new housing feels spacious and light – not crammed onto the site as you might expect from a new development.

The room for car parking is generous and there’s some green space, newly planted trees and shrubs as well, which is nice.

I was happy with the process of the viewing, applying, signing contracts and collecting keys – it was all straight forward and well communicated."

The other two sites are Hoopers Close and St Johns Road.

Hoopers Close is made up of six, one-bed flats and two, two-bed flats for market rent.

St Johns Road comprises of two, two-bed homes for affordable rent and three, two-bed homes for shared ownership.
